Clean Your Jewelry at Home: 4 Household Items That Work

shining, shimmering and clean set of rings

Jewelry pieces are expensive, and it is fitting that you want to keep them looking just as stunning as the day you bought them. Taking them to a professional jewelry cleaner, however, can cost you a lot. The good news is that you can clean your jewelry using everyday items, most of which are probably in your home right now.

Check out this list of regular household items that can do wonders for your precious pieces that you bought from your jeweler in Utah:

1. Toothpaste

Toothpaste is a cleaner that you can use on the go. It is an abrasive cleaner so it can work on its own. But you can also put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on an old toothbrush for extra scrubbing. Once everything is out, rinse the jewelry well.

2. Ammonia

You may know that ammonia is used to clean floors. Who would have thought that it would work with jewelry, too? Take ¼ cup of ammonia and mix it with a cup of warm water. Soak your diamonds in the cup and let it sit for 15 minutes. Once done, gently scrub the jewelry with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove the remaining grime.

3. Beer

Beer does not only take the edge off after a long day, it can also shine your gold. Just pour a teaspoon of beer onto a cloth and rub it smoothly on your jewelry. When you are finished, use another cloth to dry.

4. Vinegar

Vinegar can help you in anything. Soaking your best friends in vinegar for 15 minutes would bring back their shimmer. Don’t forget to swirl it around every now and then to agitate it. Once the 15 minutes is up, brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush to get rid of remaining muck. Don’t fail to remember to rinse and dry.

Just a quick reminder, though, chemicals and other abrasive cleaners are not suitable for cleaning soft stones like opals and pearls. You can wash them with soap and water, instead.
