For Parents: How to Keep Children Interested in School

Children getting on the bus

Children getting on the busChildren of all ages should have activities that keep them engaged with their studies. Good thing, there are a lot of things teachers can come up with. These can be academic activities, sports, arts, etc. For activities outside the classroom, outdoor canopies can be installed in specific parts of the school to protect children from the harmful rays of the sun. The school can also paint the ground to encourage imaginative play, like hopscotch.

Now that the teachers have done their part, you — as a parent — should have a contribution as well. Here are some tips to help your little ones be engaged at school:

Get Involved in Their Activities

Get involved with your kid’s school activities. Attend parent-teacher conferences and other events related to their studies. Be friends with their teachers and classmates’ parents so you learn a thing or two about the people they come in contact with. It is also a chance for you to stay informed about all that is happening in your kid’s school like class standing, etc.

Know if the School is the Right Environment

Check the school’s website to learn more about it, such as the layout of its buildings and other areas like the cafeteria, classrooms, etc. This is a nice way to include yourself in your kid’s life. Your kid will appreciate that. It is also on the website that you will find the contact information of their staff, the school calendar, the dates of examinations, and the class events like field trips. There are also teachers who have their own websites or online groups where they update school events, homework, test dates, events, and other details.

Help Your Kid with Their Homework

This does not mean that you are going to answer the homework for your kid. It just means that you give support and encouragement to finish the homework before you let them play or do other things at home. Homework time must be established. Give ample time for this and teach your kid to follow it.

Prepare Your Kid for School

Prepare school lunches and snacks that taste good, but are healthy. Healthy food includes whole grains, protein, food rich in fibre, fruits, yoghurt, and peanut butter.

Make sure that your kid gets the right amount of sleep, too. At least 10-12 hours of sleep is enough. Limit diversions like TV, video games, and Internet use.

Teach Your Kid Organisational Techniques

Having great organisational and management skills will help your kid manage time and schedule tasks. This means enough time for play, which your kid also needs. Encourage them to do homework first and play later. Organisational skills also teach your kid to study better.

Familiarise Yourself with the Policies in School

You should know about the disciplinary policies in school. Learn about acceptable behaviour and language in school and implement this at home. Be aware of the dress codes, electronic devices policies, and information about bullying.

Being involved is something you should do if you want your kid to have a loving environment. It is nice to join such activities because not only will you do this for your kid, but in a way, you are doing it for yourself. Knowing the different aspects of the school life of your kid will bring you closer to each other.
